By plane
The closest airport is Krabi International Airport, about 1 h 30 drive from Koh Lanta. It has an international airport which connects to many cities in Europe and Asia. Several domestic flights link Krabi to Bangkok (1 hr 10 min. flight time) and Phuket (30 min. flight time).
Minivans, public buses, taxis and shuttle buses transfer bring travellers directly to Koh Lanta Yai, where all accommodations are situated: in Hua Hin they board a car ferry to Lanta Noi, then cross this tiny island by road and reach Koh Lanta Yai with a second car ferry.
By train
There are no direct services from Bangkok to Krabi. Instead, catch a train from Hualomphong Station (Bangkok) Trang and catch a bus from there to Koh Lanta.
By road
From Bangkok airconditioned sleeping-busses are available departing every evening of the week. Check with a local travel agent for reservation. You'll arrive in Krabi where you change either to a minivan to Koh Lanta by road or to the ferry.
Several scheduled minibuses leave daily from Phuket Town via Krabi to Koh Lanta. You may also hire a taxi, charter a minivan or go by car to do the scenic route surrounding Phang Nga Bay in around 5 hours.
From Suratthani buses, taxis or mini-vans can easily be arranged at agencies in the town. Journey time via Krabi to Koh Lanta in about 6 hours.
By boat
Koh Lanta is well connected with all major islands by ferry:
Ferries from Phuket to Koh Lanta go via Koh Phiphi, where the ferry must be switched (journey time around 4 hours).
Ferries from Krabi to Koh Lanta take 2 hours.
Ferries from Langkawi and Koh Lipe take half a day, but there is a relatively new speedboat transfer, which takes only a 3 hours ride.
Private speedboat charters for private transfers between the islands can be easily organized.
Sailing seasons
The best time for sailing in The Andaman Sea is during the dry season between the months of October and May, when the northeast monsoon prevails insuring steady and pleasant sailing conditions and protected anchorages. During this time the water is at its calmest and storms are usually rare.
Between May and September the region is completely exposed to the the southwest monsoon. At this time there are long periods of fine sunny weather with good breeze, but there are also periods of unsettled weather with rain and sometimes rain squalls with strong gusts.
